Tourney Roundup: 3 Hockey Teams Ousted In D-II

A couple of unlucky bounces did in the Bolton/Coventry/Rockville ice hockey team in the first round of the Division II tournament Tuesday.

New Milford scored two goals in the first 33 seconds of the second period, then withstood a furious late-game comeback by BCR to post a 4-2 victory at the Bolton Ice Palace.

The 10th-seeded Green Wave got on the board 15 seconds into the middle period when Steven Berry fired a wrist shot into the top right corner past goaltender Connor McGrath, who appeared to be screened on the play. Eighteen seconds later, a wrister by Cole Case hit McGrath’s blocker, popped into the air and dribbled over the goal line, then some nice three-way passing resulted in a power play goal by New Milford’s Blaine McMahon near the midpoint of the session for a 3-0 lead.

BCR, the number seven seed, had two power play opportunities, including a 5-on-3 situation that carried over into the start of the third period, but Green Wave goalkeeper Nicholas Capriglione made several outstanding saves to keep the hosts off the scoreboard.

“We had some chances, but that kid made some unbelievable saves,” BCR coach Chris Stevenson said. “The difference in the game was their goaltender stymieing us.”

With less than three minutes to play, BCR got back into it on a goal by Kevin Morton off a faceoff. Stevenson pulled McGrath in favor of a sixth attacker with a minute remaining, and the strategy paid off as Morton netted his second of the game, assisted by Eddie Bates.

Berry ruined the BCR dream of a state title, however, scoring into an empty net with nine seconds left on the clock.

“We outplayed them in the second and third periods, but at the end of the day, they scored more goals than we did,” Stevenson said. “These seniors have everything to be proud of – moving up to D-II and being in the game right until the end.”
