Student Athlete of the Month: Glastonbury’s Fusco

Abbey has accomplished a lot both in and outside the pool. She has been an All-Academic choice three years running. She was also a junior national qualifier in the 100 back, a three year sectional qualifier, All-State three times, All-Conference three times, was the MVP of the varsity squad three times and was a Class LL Champion in the 100 free.
How Abbey prepares before a meet: Right before a big swim meet, I like to relax and try not to over think my races. Before I step up onto the block for a race, no matter how important, I circle my thumb on the block three times for good luck. I have been doing that ever since freshman year!
How Abbey has improved this offseason: During the off season, I trained really hard to qualify for Junior Nationals.
I started doing more cross training between workouts in the pool and dry land circuits.
Abbey’s most memorable moment as a Tomahawk: During my sophomore year, our team beat Cheshire and broke their long streak of wins. Cheshire had won 387 consecutive swim meets and our team battled right to the final relay to beat them by 14 points. It was such an amazing experience seeing the stands packed with fans cheering us on.
Why Abbey is excited for 2013-14: As our season is winding down, I am most excited for the conference and state meets. We have put in a lot of hard work this season and it is really nice when our times drop. We have a very talented team this year and we are hoping to go very far in our state meet.
Abbey’s favorite pro athlete: My favorite pro athlete is basketball player, Kyrie Irving. He played for Duke University for one year before he moved on to the NBA. My family and I are huge Duke fans and seeing how talented Kyrie was made my want to strive to do better.
Abbey’s plans after he graduates: I am going on official visits to Division 1 schools in hope of finding the right fit!
