Top Performers of the Week: Boys Lacrosse Duos Lead Teams in Wins

It was a week of great performances by duos for local boys lacrosse teams last week. These performances helped each of their teams to impressive wins.

The Glastonbury senior duo of Mike Hawkins and Ronan Jacoby helped the Tomahawks blow out a solid Avon team 22-4 on Friday. Hawkins fired in six goals and Jacoby five. With the win, Glastonbury secured third place in the Class L standings.

The RHAM senior tandem of Connor Missal and Alex Rivosa led the team to a hard-fought win against Northwest Catholic Friday. Missal continued his hot start by scoring six goals, while Rivosa set up the Sachems offensive attack with four assists.

Suffield’s Dan Farhad and Joey Smith led the Eagles to a 19-7 rout of Tolland Thursday, ending their three-game losing streak. The senior pair scored a combined 14 goals, with Farhad finishing with eight and Smith six.

East Catholic sophomore Jake Tellers and South Windsor senior Matt Greer each scored four goals Thursday in easy wins for their squads against Rocky Hill and Ellington, respectively. South Windsor maintained its perfect start and second-place ranking in Class L with the win.


The South Windsor trio of senior Reilly McMahon, freshman Megan LeMay and sophomore Maria Hanchuk helped the Bobcats extend their winning streak to four with great performances Thursday and Friday. In Friday’s five-inning shutout win against Bloomfield, McMahon smashed a three-run home run and LeMay earned the win while allowing no hits. The previous day, Hanchuk continued her run of great pitching performances by striking out 14 batters in a 1-0 takedown of E.O. Smith. She also had an RBI single.

Tolland’s offense was on fire in Monday’s win against Manchester behind the senior trio of Tora Nicholas, Sydney Orr and Cassie Black. Nicholas went 3-4 with two triples and drove in three runs, Orr also hit a triple and drove in three, and Black recorded two RBI.

Rockville senior Morgan Bolduk overpowered the East Hartford offense in a win Wednesday, striking out nine and allowing a single hit. Two days earlier, RHAM senior ace Kristi Van Meter was again impressive against Enfield, allowing just one run and two hits in an easy win. Glastonbury sophomore Lindsay Curto hit a grand slam to lead the Tomahawks to a win against Bulkeley Friday.


It was a great week for area pitchers. Tolland senior Matt Curtis dominated on the mound against Manchester Monday, striking out eight and allowing just one run. Four days later, South Windsor’s Brendan Mabey had a great all-around game in a win against Bloomfield, allowing just one run and two hits and smacking a home run.

Also on Monday in wins, East Catholic junior Zach Simone shut down the Bloomfield offense in a win, allowing just one run and hit, while Enfield senior Kyle Menaker continued his great pitching by holding RHAM to one run and two hits. Ellington senior Kyle Luginbuhl helped shut out East Granby Friday while allowing just three hits. The next day, Rockville senior Tim Baczanski did the same against Plainville and allowed two hits.

Baczanski’s senior teammate Max St. Germain recorded four hits and drove in two runs in the Rams win against Hartford Public Monday.     


Rockville seniors Nikita Biahliak and Nate Shliphack had their typical strong performances as the Rams won two of three games on the week. Biahliak hit 13 kills and nine digs in Friday’s win against Enfield, with Shliphack bettering him with 17 kills and seven digs. Earlier in the week, Biahliak smacked 11 kills against East Hartford.

Glastonbury seniors Mike Allen and Pat Morrisroe similarly stepped up to lead Glastonbury to two wins. Morrisroe helped anchor the Tomahawks offense with 11 assists in Monday’s sweep of Bulkeley. Allen smacked 16 kills in a win against Farmington Friday, and also recorded 10 on Wednesday against Newington.

South Windsor senior Chris Roberts earned 26 assists in a win against Bloomfield. Bobcats  junior Max Iacovelli hit 28 kills against Maloney two days earlier. Enfield junior Nick Watson hit 37 assists in the loss to Rockville.


East Catholic junior Alexa Weber reached double-digits in goals for the second consecutive week, scoring 10 times in Monday’s win against Bolton. She also scored six goals in a loss to Canton.

South Windsor junior Ali Martin maintained her elite play, scoring a combined 10 goals in wins against Hall and Windsor Monday and Friday. Fellow junior Lauren Crusha also scored four goals in the second win. RHAM sophomore Camryn Antler fired in six scores in Monday’s loss to Windsor. Tolland junior Corey Mahlstedt earned four goals to lead the Eagles to a win against Northwest Catholic Monday.


Suffield seniors Austin Rupp and Tom Durkin finished second and fourth at the Avon Invitational on Friday. Rupp shot a 68 to tie for runner-up, while Durkin shot a 69.
