Three up, three down for Enfield

Different division, same result.  After advancing to the CIAC Class M state tournament semifinals the previous two years the Enfield girls basketball team moved up to the Class LL tournament this year and once again the Eagles rode a big wave all the way to the final four.

But for the third consecutive season, Enfield is going home one step shy of its stated goal – the state championship game.  Enfield, which bumped up to Class LL this year after merging with its cross-town rival Fermi, was bounced out of the state tournament semifinals after a 57-36 loss to New London Monday night.

Enfield (26-2) came into the game with plenty of momentum as the No. 2 seed. But the third seeded Whalers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The Whalers led 11-6 after one quarter and 30-18 at the half. Enfield had managed to cut the deficit to one point midway through the second quarter but when junior center Mary Baskerville picked up her second foul and headed to the bench, the Eagles did not score the rest of the half.  New London will play top seeded Trumbull either Saturday or Sunday in the Class L championship game at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Junior guard Danielle Delano led the Eagles with 11 points. Baskerville had 10 and Cat Fonseca chipped in with six. India Pagan led New London with 17 points.
