Three Local Teams Win State Cross Country Titles

In recent seasons, the Tolland High girls cross country team has made a habit of winning the Class M championships, and they maintained their title grip on Saturday at Manchester’s Wickham Park. This year, they were joined by two other squads. The Tolland boys stepped up and matched their classmates by also winning M, while the RHAM girls captured the Class MM title.

Class M Girls

Tolland won its sixth consecutive championship by relying on both its stars and depth, finishing with 26 points. Seniors Kat DeLoreto and Hayley Collins finished first and second with times of 18:48 and 18:52, while fellow senior Michaela Caron was fourth in 18:58. Senior Sydney Perryman (20:42) and sophomore Kaitlyn Bedard (21:20) finished in the top 15 at eighth and 14th.

Ellington finished second with 98 points. Freshman Kathyrn Bananno and senior Jenni Giacolone were fifth and sixth in 20:33 and 20:36.

Class M Boys

Tolland won a highly competitive championship with 67 points, six ahead of East Catholic and seven of Ellington. Senior Josh Bedard led the way, winning the individual title with a time of 16:34. Eagles freshman Killian McNamee was eighth in 17:00 and sophomores Stephen Sutton (17:05) and Nolan Alexander (17:36) also had excellent races, finishing 12th and 17th.

Ellington seniors David Clavet and Thomas Arbeiter earned runner-up and fourth, finishing in 16:43 and 16:52. East Catholic’s Evan Kennedy (senior), Heath Olivieri (sophomore) and Cooper Shifrin (junior) ran times of 16:53, 17:02 and 17:03 to finish fifth, 10th and 11th, respectively. Suffield finished fourth with 88 points. Freshman Nick Sinofsky finished third in 16:50 and junior Samatar Wehelie ninth in 17:02.

Class MM Girls

RHAM took home the state title with 68 points, easily defeating second-place Avon (99). Junior Libby Walker was the team’s top runner, finishing fourth with a time of 20:31. Sophomores Brooke Almeida and Abbigail Potticary finished eighth and 112th with marks of 20:38 and 21:02.

Class LL Girls

Glastonbury was unable to repeat as champions but still had a fabulous performance finishing runner up to Ridgefield (57) with 68 points. Juniors Erin McGill and Alex Ross each finished in 19:50, good for eighth and ninth.

Class LL Boys

GHS senior Chris Reeves finished fifth in 16:22, while his squad placed seventh.

Class SS Girls

Somers senior Ava Roche finished fifth with a time of 20:19, helping her squad earn sixth place. Eighth place East Catholic was led by freshman Fiona Crowley and sophomore Molly Brown, who earned sixth and 12th place in 20:22 and 20:41.
