Lacrosse State Tournaments Begin Tuesday and Wednesday

The brackets for the CIAC Tournaments in boys and girls lacrosse came out Friday morning. The first round games for girls lacrosse will occur late Tuesday afternoon, with second round games on Thursday. The first round games for boys lacrosse will occur late Wednesday afternoon, with second round games on Saturday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

South Windsor and Glastonbury qualified for the Class L Tournament. South Windsor (13-3) is seeded fourth and will face No. 13 Wilton (8-8). The Bobcats will face either No. 5 Cheshire or No. 12 Fairfield Ludlowe in the second round with a win. South Windsor lost in last year’s first round to Darien. No. 8 Glastonbury (10-6) will host No. 9 Staples (9–6), and a win will lead to a matchup with either top-seeded Darien or Newtown. The Tomahawks were the top seed last season but were upset in the second round by Wilton.

East Catholic, Somers and Ellington are all seeded in the top 10 of Class S. East Catholic (14-2) is seeded second behind Old Lyme, and will face No. 15 St. Joseph (9-8). With a win, the Eagles will battle either No. 7 Lewis Mills or No. 10 Housatonic Regional. East Catholic did not qualify for last season’s tournament. No. 3 Somers (13-3) will contend with No. 14 Morgan (9-8), with a matchup looming with either N0. 6 Stonington or No. 11 Granby if it wins. The Spartans defeated Rocky Hill and Northwest Catholic before falling to Old Saybrook in 2015. No. 9 Ellington (10-6) will face No. 8 Old Saybrook (10-6) in the first round. If the Knights triumph, they could contend with either top-seeded Old Lyme or North Branford. Last year’s team lost in the first round to Old Saybrook.

BOYS LACROSSE

Glastonbury was the one squad that advanced to the first round of the L Tournament (South Windsor lost in the qualifying round to Trumbull). The third seeded Tomahawks (14-2) will host No. 14 Greenwich (10-6). With a win, they will face either No. 6 Fairfield Prep or No. 11 Cheshire. Glastonbury defeated NFA and Staples last season as a No. 2 seed before losing to Darien.

The quartet of Somers, East Catholic, Ellington and Suffield will compete in the S Tournament, with Somers the top seed. The Spartans (14-2) will host No. 16 Northwest Catholic (9-7) before a likely matchup with either Stonington or Weston. Somers was seeded second last season but lost to eventual champion St. Joseph after defeating Toland. No. 3 East Catholic (13-3) has a first round matchup against Lewis Mills (10-7), and could battle Weston or No. 11 Ellington (10-6) with a win. East Catholic defeated Morgan and East Lyme last season before falling to St. Joseph, while Ellington did not qualify. No. 21 Suffield (9-8) defeated No. 12 Morgan 16-5 in the qualifying round, leading to a battle with No. 5 Rocky Hill (13-3) Tuesday. If the Wildcats again pull off the upset, they will face either Granby or Haddam-Killingworth. Suffield lost to Valley Regional in last season’s qualifying round.
