Top Performers of The Week: Carbone Leads East Catholic to Finals

Led by senior star Mark Carbone as well as junior Mike McGuirl and freshman Joey Reilly, East Catholic boys basketball outlasted Notre Dame-West Haven and Windsor to advance to the Class L State Tournament finals. Carbone scored 59 points between the two games, while McGuirl scored 27 and Reilly averaged 10 points.

Carbone, who will play for the University of San Diego beginning next season, led the Eagles to a 67-59 quarterfinal victory against the No. 5 Green Knights last Friday by scoring 25 points. He hit three consecutive three pointers at the beginning of the fourth quarter to help his team take the lead. McGuirl scored 18 points and Reilly 11.

In the Tuesday night semifinal, East Catholic had a comeback for the ages against top-seeded Windsor, rallying from a 30-16 halftime deficit to earn a 60-57 overtime win. Carbone scored 26 points in the second half and overtime to finish with 34, and his four-point play with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation tied the game at 55 and sent it into extra time. McGuirl and Reilly each scored nine points.

The Eagles will face No.3 Middletown in the Class L final Saturday night at Mohegan Sun.


Girls Basketball 

South Windsor and Enfield each had a duo of players perform well in their state tournament semifinal losses.

South Windsor senior Molly Murphy had a night to remember in the eighth-seeded Bobcats 66-57 loss to No. 4 Stamford last Friday, scoring 30 points while also performing well on the boards. While fellow senior Alex Goslin struggled with her shooting at times, the point guard ended up having a solid night, finishing with 16 points. South Windsor ended the season 20-6.

Enfield sophomore Danielle Delano did her best to lead the second-seeded Raiders to a win against No. 11 Notre Dame-Fairfield the same night by scoring 24 points, but her squad ultimately suffered a 60-55 upset loss. While fellow sophomore Mary Baskerville struggled with foul trouble, she was effective while on the floor, scoring 13. Enfield finished with a record of 26-1, the best in program history.



South Windsor senior Cory Madalena won the 100 yard breaststroke at the Class L Championship on Wednesday. Madalena finished first in 59.05, helping the Bobcats finish third overall.


Bolton/Coventry/Rockville/RHAM hockey forward Connor Morton had a monster match in the team’s 8-3 win against Brookfield/Bethel/Danbury in the first round of the Division III State Tournament on the 7th, with teammates Calvin Tonzi, Paul Bates and Nick LeGryt each having strong days as well. Morton scored three goals and had four assists, while Tonzi recorded both two goals and assists. Bates scored twice and LeGryt had two assists as well. BCR lost in the second round to NFI.
