Girls Basketball – Enfield Advances to Semis

By Matt Stevens

ENFIELD – The Enfield girls’ basketball team kept its undefeated season alive and earned a spot in the CIAC Class M tournament semifinals with a decisive 62-33 win over Rocky Hill Monday night

Enfield, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, jumped out to a 15-0 early lead and never looked back Rocky Hill’s Jenna Chipkin finally hit a 3-pointer to start a mini-run for the Terries late in the first quarter, but Enfield answered right back. Morgan Baskerville hit a string of hoops down the stretch in the second quarter and the Raiders took a 37-16 lead into halftime.

Coach Jay Gaucher said his team may have come out a little flat in the second half, but soon picked it up, with three-pointers put in by Cat Fonseca and Danielle Delano. The Terriers were held to just six points in the third. Delano led the Raiders with 22 points while Morgan Baskerville had 14. Senior captain Jenna Chipkin led the Terriers with 13.

Gaucher said his team is playing about as well as they can, right now.
“I thought our press really relayed us into some easy transition hoops,” he said, adding that getting the team is also full strength, after some injuries.

“It’s nice to have our whole team back, so other people don’t have to do as much,” he said.

The Raiders aren’t looking ahead to Mohegan Sun quite yet, and are focused on the next opponent, which will be No. 11 Notre Dame-Fairfield (17-6).

“We’re just taking it one game at a time,” Gaucher said. “Now we’re just thinking about the semifinals.”
Delano said the Raiders are focused after having made a deep tournament run last year.

“We keep reminding ourselves that, last year, we went to the semi-finals, but lost,” Delano said. “We want to take it it one step further and get to Mohegan.”

Preparing for the next game won’t require any major adjustments, Gaucher said.
“We’re just going to work on our basics, our skills, and our execution,” he said.

Delano said the season is meaningful, because it will be the last one for the Raiders before Enfield High School merges with Fermi, and the new combined team will be known as the Eagles.

“This season is one of the most important ones…because it’s the last one as the Raiders.

When asked about possibly meeting the other undefeated team in the Class M bracket, Cromwell (23-0), Delano said that would certainly be a good game.

“It would definitely be a good competition,” she said. “They’re undefeated, too, and have played very hard teams.”
