Tolland Tops Fermi In Girls Basketball

By Nate Zielinsky

ENFIELD – On Senior Night at Enrico Fermi High School the Fermi Falcons girls basketball team had plenty of motivation to forge out a victory against visiting Tolland. But a tough zone defense by Tolland and a second half scoring spree by senior guard Ally Finik ultimately proved too much for the Falcons as Tolland topped Fermi 53-33 Saturday night.

The game was tight in the first half with Tolland (11-6) leading 26-19. Fermi (4-14) inched closer on a few occasions in the second half but timely jump shots by Finik put an end to any hopes of a Falcons upset victory.

Finik finished with a game high 15 points and praised her teammates afterwards. “I get good passes from my teammates, and I couldn’t have scored all those points without them,” said Finik.

Finik also got help from her two post players – Annie Geitner and Taylor Hall – who scored 11 and 5 points respectively. Both did a great job on the offensive glass, grabbing a handful of rebounds that led to second chance baskets by Tolland.

Fermi stayed in the game with impressive outside shooting. Senior Tori Weatherwax scored 9 points on three three-pointers, and Katherine Kusta also hit two triples while scoring 8 points for the Falcons.

The game changed when Tolland switched up its defensive strategy during the halftime break and made the move to a 2-3 zone.

“We were getting beat off the dribble, and needed a little more help defense so we adjusted to a zone in the second half and that helped a lot,” said Tolland Coach Vinnie Cianfarani.

It proved to be the right move as Tolland outscored Fermi 27-14 in the second half and held the Falcons to only six points in the pivotal third quarter.

“He has intense half time speeches, but we knew we needed to calm down the energy in the gym and we needed to keep pushing and playing our game,” said Finik about the changes made after half.

The Falcons will look to rebound from the tough loss on the road against East Catholic on Thursday while Tolland will look to extend its winning streak to three games at home against a solid South Windsor team on Monday night.
