Weekly College Notebook: Bridge Earns Honors

Bentley senior diver Colton Bridge was awarded for his outstanding performances against St. Michael’s and Keene State the previous week by being named a Diving Athlete of the Week for the Northeast-10 Conference last Wednesday. Bridge received the award for the sixth time this season and the 18th time in his career. The Tolland native backed up the recognition by winning the one-meter and three-meter competitions in Tuesday’s victory at Bridgewater State. Bridge posted scores of 279.80 and 308.50 in the events.

Bridge and the rest of his squad will compete in the Northeast-10 Championships from February 4th-7th.

Men’s Basketball

Eastern Connecticut teammates Trachone Preston and Hugh Lindo, who also played together at Enfield High, both played well in games against Western Connecticut and Southern Main Wednesday and Saturday. Preston averaged 15 points in the two games, and scored 18 in Saturday’s loss. Lindo scored both a combined 27 points and rebounds in the contests, extending his streak of double-doubles to nine games.

Southern New Hampshire senior BJ Cardarelli scored 17 points last Wednesday at Southern Connecticut to lead the Penmen to a victory. The former Manchester High star also grabbed eight rebounds in wins against New Haven and Le Moyne on Saturday and Tuesday.

Women’s Basketball

Hartwick College junior Jacqui Foreman was named the Empire 8 Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday, January 18th. The former Tolland High star dominated in wins against Utica and Alfred University on the 12th and 15th. Foreman scored a career-high 22 points against Utica, also grabbing 17 rebounds, and had 14 points and a career-high 19 boards three days later. She then added 14 points the next day in a win against Elmira.

Albertus Magnus star Olivia Bolden had a typically great performance against St. Vincent on Tuesday, with the South Windsor native posting 18 points and 12 rebounds in a win.

University of Hartford sophomore Janelle Harrison played well in two home wins against UMBC and New Hampshire. The Cromwell native averaged 10.5 points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds against UNH on Saturday.

Wrestling 

Springfield College senior Tyler Keane and Western New England junior Brian Donovan both competed in Saturday’s NEWA Dual Meet Championships, held at Bridgewater State. Keane, a Glastonbury native, won all four of his matches in the 133 pound division, defeating opponents from Bridgewater, Wesleyan, Daniel Webster and Worcester Polytechnic. Donovan went 3-1 in the 197 pound division, as the Manchester High alumnus defeated wrestlers from Daniel Webster, Southern Maine and Trinity.

Hockey

Enfield native Mike Cherpak scored for Suffolk in a win at Salve Regina on Saturday, while Rocky Hill native Patrick Kirkland scored for UConn in the Huskies tie at Boston College Saturday night.

Men’s Swimming 

Southern Connecticut’s Tyler Vander Vos had a great meet in Friday’s Senior Night win against Pace. The sophomore and former South Windsor High standout won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.17 and was a member of the winning 400 yard medley relay team, which finished in 3:30.38.
