Top Performers of the Week: Track Athletes Shine at Invitationals

After an outstanding season in cross country, Somers runner Ava Roche is having similar success for the indoor track squad. The junior won both the 1000 and 3200 meter races at the NCCC Invitational on Saturday in times of 3:22.36 and 12:24.51.

The Ellington teams had one winner each. Junior David Clavet won the 1000 in 2:44.38, while sophomore Savanna Macaluso outran and leaped past the completion in the 5 meter hurdles, winning in 9:56. In addition, Suffield senior Shawn Andrade won the 300 in 38:74.

South Windsor’s Michael Stoker is also building on his fall success this winter. The senior won the 1600 at Saturday’s McReavey Invitational in 4:31.78.

Boys Basketball

Eight area players scored 20 or more points in games between Thursday and Saturday. Rocky Hill junior star Nick Casiano had the highest total, scoring 29 points in Thursday’s win against Bristol Central. The same night, Somers junior Doug Hostetler scored 21 in a rout of Public Safety. The next night, senior teammate Greg McCloskey scored 24 to lead the Spartans to a win over Coventry. Also on Friday, East Catholic’s Mark Carbone scored 26 in a win against Tolland, while Windsor Locks Chavon George, South Windsor’s Kewan Smoot and Fermi’s Josh Pasini scored 23, 22 and 20 points in losses. Pasini added five assists. Finally on Saturday, Suffield senior Jake Arruda scored 25 in a win against Enfield.

While they did not score 20 points, Glastonbury’s Jack Twardy and Fermi’s Colin O’Connell both had strong offensive games. Twardy scored 15 and grabbed eight rebounds in Wednesday’s win against Bloomfield, while O’Connell went for 18 and eight in the loss to Hartford Public.

Girls Basketball

Enfield star Danielle Delano played very well in big wins against Granby Memorial and at Suffield. The senior scored 13 points and recorded four assists and steals on Wednesday and had 20 in Friday’s victory. Teammate Mary Baskerville scored 10 and had eight rebounds, six assists and four blocks against Granby Memorial.

Seniors Alex Goslin and Molly Murphy were their usual dynamic selves in Friday’s impressive win at Bloomfield. Goslin scored 22 and grabbed five steals, while Murphy scored 21 and grabbed seven boards and four steals.

Junior Raelynn Voislow and sophomore Katie Shea both had a double-double Friday night. Voislow scored 23 and had 11 boards in Windsor Locks loss to Canton, while Shea went for 13 and 15 in RHAM’s win over Manchester. Rocky Hill senior Jenna Chipkin led the Terriers to a win against Bristol Central on Wednesday by scoring 21, while Somers senior captain Danielle Urbon had 16 in Friday’s loss to Coventry.       

Boys Hockey 

Three players had outstanding games on Wednesday. E.O. Smith/Tolland senior forward Jimmy Petrella scored twice in his squad’s win over Rocky Hill/Middletown. Meanwhile, junior Brendan Looney led Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks to a win against South Windsor by scoring twice. Scott Swan also scored twice for the Bobcats.


East Catholic senior John Desautels went 4-0 at the Berlin Duels at the 285 weight class, leading his team to the championship. Desautels is undefeated this season.
