Top Performers of the Week: Girls Named to All-Tournament Teams

RHAM’s Lia Baroncini and Ellington’s Caitlyn Gresh were both named to all-tournament teams last Wednesday after strong performances in the holiday tournaments their squads competed in. Baroncini, a sophomore, scored 15 points in that night’s win against McMahon in the Fairfield Ludlowe Holiday Tournament, and scored a combined 27 points in two tournament games. Gresh, a junior, scored 12 points that night in a win against Lewis Mills in the Sheehan Holiday Tournament, and averaged 11 points in two tournament games. In addition, she had eight assists in the Knights first tourney game.

Stars Mary Baskerville (Enfield) and Kaitlin Szemreylo (East Catholic) displayed their outstanding versatility this past week in games. Baskerville scored 25 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and earned six blocks and four steals in Saturday’s win at Plainfield, while Szemreylo had a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds and forced seven steals in Tuesday’s defeat of Manchester.

South Windsor senior point guard Alex Goslin scored a combined 43 points in wins against Bristol Eastern and Hartford Public on Saturday and Tuesday, also adding six assists and steals in the second game. Suffield teammates Katie Roy and McKenzie Rusczyk  scored 21 and 19 points, respectively, in Tuesday’s win against Ellington. East Windsor sophomore Loren D’Agostino recorded a double-double with 12 points and 15 boards in Monday’s win against rival Somers, while fellow big women Taylor Hall had 11 and 10 for Tolland on Tuesday in a win against Rockville.        

Boys Basketball

East Catholic ballers Mookie Lester, Mark Carbone and Mike McGuirl formed a three-headed monster that terrorized Manchester in Tuesday’s road victory, with the trio scoring a combined 58 points in the 69-54 win. Lester led the way with 22 points, while Carbone and McGuirl both had 18.

Rocky Hill junior Nick Casiano continued his torrid start to the season by averaging 19 points in games at Rockville and Maloney, both losses. Tolland junior guard Andrew Jaworski scored a combined 31 points against Bloomfield and Rockville, adding 11 rebounds in Tuesday’s win. Backcourt mate Dave Busch scored 19 against Rockville. Suffield senior forward Sam Flynn averaged 16 points in wins against South Windsor and Ellington, with fellow senior Jacob Arruda scoring 22 in Tuesday’s triumph. East Windsor senior forward Tristan Givens scored 21 on Tuesday in a win at Classical Magnet. Finally, big men Sam Gagnon (RHAM) and Romeo Sowah (Rockville) played great against Fermi and Rocky Hill, respectively. Gagnon, a senior, had 13 points and 12 rebounds against Fermi, while Sowah, a junior, outmuscled the Terriers for 12 points and nine boards.

Boys Hockey

Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks senior Colin MacDougald had a hat trick in Saturday’s 4-3 overtime win against Glastonbury. MacDougald scored the game-winner midway through overtime. E.O. Smith/Tolland junior forward Nick Mayer had another big game last Wednesday against Bolton/Coventry/Rockville/RHAM, scoring twice in the win.
