Player Spotlight: Mike Zimmerman

By Nate Zielinski

This month’s Player Spotlight nomination not only lived every player’s dream of scoring their team’s game winning goal, Mike Zimmerman also accomplished that feat for Tolland in the boys soccer Class M State Championship game.

“Being the captain, it meant a lot to me to be able to put the finishing touch on what we’ve prepared and worked so hard for all season,” said Zimmerman

Zimmerman, a senior, scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 win over Bacon Academy and it will surely be a moment he will never forget.

“All I was thinking was ‘keep it low’ because it was bouncing and I was able to make good contact with the ball,” said Zimmerman about his thought process during the game winning shot.

Tolland didn’t start the way the season the way they wanted as they got off to a 2-2-1 start, but Zimmerman and his team sharpened their focus.  After beating their rival E.O. Smith, 4-1 they gained confidence and knew they could beat anyone.

Their last game of the season is where the momentum started for Tolland as they were looking to win their first state title since 2009. They beat E.O. Smith on the road to win their conference.

“It was a great way to head into the state championship and a perfect way to end a great regular season,” said Zimmerman.

As for Zimmerman’s soccer career at the next level, he plans on playing club or intramural in college, but he already has his eyes set on another state title.  He is also the captain of the golf team, and many of his friends from the soccer play with him as well. The team has been close to a state title in recent years, and Zimmerman is hoping this time around they can get it done.

“One down, one to go,” said Zimmerman. “That would be the best senior year I could ever imagine, leading two teams to two state championships.”
