Weekly College Notebook: Doran and Murphy Again Earn Conference Honors

Another week, another series of strong performances by local players for the Eastern Connecticut men’s soccer team.

Sophomore forward Xavier Doran (RHAM) and freshman goalkeeper Ryan Murphy (Cromwell High) both earned Little East Conference weekly awards on Monday. Doran, who is from Hebron, was named Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, while Murphy was recognized as Goalkeeper of the Week for the fourth time this season.

Against Rhode Island College on Saturday, Doran scored his third consecutive game-winning goal on a header with 1:43 remaining in overtime to give the Warriors a 1-0 win. Doran is third in the conference in goals with 10. He also had an assist in Eastern’s 2-1 overtime win against Cost Guard on Tuesday.

Murphy saved five shots against RIC, extending his scoreless streak to 308 minutes, 41 seconds. He has six shutouts this season and is allowing an average of just 0.58 goals a game.

The Warriors are 14-2-1 and first in the Little East.

Fontaine Leads Quinnipiac Offense

Jess Fontaine helped the Bobcats soccer team to a strong week with her offensive contributions. The junior and Enfield native scored the team’s lone goal in a 1-1 tie at Fairfield last Wednesday. Fontaine tied the game in the 84th minute, and the teams went on to play into double overtime. On Saturday, Fontaine earned two assists in Quinnipiac’s 4-3 win at Iona in double overtime, the second coming on the game-winning goal.

Berey Helps Tufts to Win
