TSD Player Spotlight: Mark Hickman, Ellington High Football

By Reid L. Walmark

This month’s edition of the Sports Department Player Spotlight features one of the best running backs in Ellington High School history.

Mark Hickman, a versatile back recently set the school record for career touchdowns (33) and is atop the school’s all-time scoring list (210).

“Getting the record was an emotional roller coaster,” said Hickman.  “It took years of hard work and I couldn’t have done it without my linemen.”

Hickman is a threat in both the passing game and especially the running game.  There is no better evidence of that than the record tying and setting touchdowns.  In the Cromwell/Portland game, Hickman had two rushing touchdowns near the goal line, and then a 17-yard touchdown catch to set the record.

As for the most memorable touchdown in Hickman’s run, he went with the record setter for the all-time scoring list.

“The touchdown against Cromwell/Portland in a close game, and it was a nice catch with a toe drag in a really close game,” said Hickman.

Ellington is now 4-0 this year behind Hickman and a complete team has them poised for a playoff run.

“It’s relaxing to know the offense is so potent, and we believe in ourselves and believe we can win a Class S state championship,” said Hickman.

As for the future of Ellington’s most successful running back, Hickman is ready to play at the next level.  A couple of his top options to play college football are Assumption and American International College in Massachusetts.
