Laura Smolinski, Colby-Sawyer volleyball

Smolinski, a senior, continued her strong play this past week for the Chargers. On Saturday, the former RHAM star helped the team sweep Johnson State College and Lyndon State College. Against Johnson State, Smolinski led the Chargers with 29 assists and finished second in digs with 10. In the second game, she again had 29 assists and 10 digs and also added 4 aces. Earlier in the week, Smolinski had 15 assists and 13 digs in a loss to Saint Michael’s.

Men’s Soccer

A trio of local goaltenders had strong performances for their schools this past week. Nichols college goaltender Alex Gaes (Somers) shut out New England 1-0, making five saves. The senior is averaging 6.5 saves per game for the 6-6 Bison. Brandeis netminder Ben Woodhouse (Suffield) made five saves in a 4-2 win against Carnegie Mellon and four in a 0-0 shutout of MIT. On the season, the sophomore has recorded five shutouts for the 9-1-1 Judges. Finally, Central Connecticut freshman keeper Ryan Murphy (Cromwell) earned his fifth shutout of the season on Sunday in a 2-0 win against Keene State. Murphy is averaging five saves per game.

Xavier Doran

Doran, a teammate of Murphy’s, helped lead the 9-1-1 Blue Devils to the Keene State win by earning both a goal and assist. The sophomore forward and Hebron native assisted on the first goal before scoring in the 78th minute on header. Doran is tied for  the team lead in goals with five.
