Spotlight: Sarah O’Neil

Sarah O'Neil - FermiSarah is co-captain of the Fermi-Enfield-Somers tri-op swimming team. She is a high honors student who has received awards for excellence in Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-calculus, AP Physics 1, AP Chemistry, AP U.S. History, Spanish III, Civics Law and Citizenship. She has been a semifinalist for the Governor’s Scholar Award and a Rensselaer medalist.

How do you prepare before a meet? I practice both sprints and distance swimming and work to improve both my starts and turns. I work to remain confident and positive in the team and in my own abilities.

What are you most looking forward to in regard to your fall season? I am looking forward to positively leading the team to personal best times and team accomplishments. I hope to improve my personal times while continuing to mentor other swimmers.

What has been your biggest highlight to date in your high school uniform? I broke seven minutes in the 500 freestyle during my junior year.

Who has been your biggest sports influence? Janet Fitzsimons, my first swimming coach.

Who is your favorite pro or college athlete? Michael Phelps.

What are your plans beyond high school? I plan to attend college, majoring in biomedical or mechanical engineering. I hope to obtain both my Master’s and PhD in engineering, and then work as a researcher and a professor with a bionics focused engineering group. I plan to take swimming as a gym requirement for the college I am most interested in, and I hope to participate in intramural swimming if available.
