Local Teams Succeeding in Baseball, Softball Tournaments

Softball and baseball teams from the four towns covered in The Sports Department East edition were achieving a high level of success in tournament play.

Tolland 11-12 softball defeated PELL/Woodstock, 7-4 on July 1 to capture the District 12 championship. In District 8, Ellington went 3-1 in pool play, then defeated Manchester in the semifinals before falling to unbeaten Windsor in the district finals.

In 11-12 baseball, Ellington was 4-0 and South Windsor went 3-1 in pool play to advance to the district finals. Tolland lost a heartbreaking 2-1 opener to Killingly in District 12, but rebounded to defeat Pomfret-Eastford 11-0 and Brooklyn 10-5.

Tolland 10-11 baseball got off to a smashing start in District 12 pool play, crushing Stafford 13-1 and Killingly 23-0. Vernon-Rockville and Ellington each won two games in District 8 pool play.

The 9-10 baseball tournaments saw Tolland win its first three games in District 12 by a combined score of 32-8. In District 8, Ellington was also perfect through its first three outings.

9-10 softball and 13-14 baseball action was just getting underway at press time.

District 8 baseball championship games are slated for ages 10-11 (July 14), 9-10 (July 20) and 11-12 (July 21). District 12 baseball utilizes a double-elimination system rather than pool play. Championship game dates were scheduled for ages 10-11 (July 11 and 13), 9-10 (July 16-17) and 1-12 (July 17-18).
