Ellington High School junior Micah Fox finished the 2015 tennis season undefeated, and would have been the top seed in the Class M singles competition.

Instead, Fox opted to play in the doubles tournament with longtime friend Kevin Sisco, a senior, and the pairing brought the Knights a state championship.

The duo breezed past Ishan Mirchandani and Matthew Sydney of Weston by scores of 6-2, 6-1 in the title match Thursday at Conard High School in West Hartford.

Requiring just 42 minutes to complete the straight-set victory, Fox and Sisco earned the distinction of defeating a doubles team from Weston, the Class M team champion, for the third consecutive match. In the quarterfinals, they beat Eric Benninghoff and Jesse Kallins, 6-0, 6-2, then toppled Pranav Madan and Greg Portner in the semifinals, 7-6, 6-2.

In the finals, the first set involved six service breaks, with Sisco holding serve on both of his opportunities for a 6-2 win. The Ellington pair broke Weston’s serve in the first and third games of the second set, racing to a 4-0 advantage before breaking serve again in the seventh game for a 6-1 win and the first tennis championship in school history.

A complete story about Fox and Sisco’s record-setting run, including interviews with them and coach Rich Willis, will appear in the June 2015 print edition of The Sports Department.
