Somers SAM: Zach Varnauskas

Zach is a senior baseball player at Somers, who has served as team captain and won a Scholar-Athlete Award. Academically, he is a member of the National Honor Society.

How do you prepare before a game? Before every high school baseball game, my teammates and I meet up in our classes to talk about our game plan and what we expect to see later that day on the field. I always try to stay hydrated and eat healthy on game days so I don’t feel lazy or tired when it’s my turn to bat or make a play. Once I get out of school, I head to the field to stretch and talk with my team to loosen up and get the nerves out of my system.

What are you most looking forward to in regard to your spring season? I am excited to see us continue to win and perform consistently like we did last year. Losing seniors from the previous year is tough for any sports team, but our younger players are certainly stepping up and filling important roles both in the lineup and on the field. I would love to see us hang up another banner just like we did last year.

What has been your biggest highlight to date in your high school uniform? The biggest highlight of my high school baseball career was the end of last year’s season when we managed to win our conference and hang up a banner for our school. Last year’s team was built from the ground up, so to speak, since the majority of us had played together for about 10 years. A lot of high school athletes have won awards and championships, but it was even more impressive to see such a close group of friends and players succeed and to see our hard work pay off.

Who has been your biggest sports influence? My biggest sports influence has been my surrounding teammates throughout my entire baseball career. We win and lose together as a team and always manage to make such a competitive sport a fun one, as well.

Who is your favorite pro or college athlete? Dustin Pedroia from the Boston Red Sox. He is such a determined, hard worker who has a scrappy style of play like myself.

What are your plans beyond high school? I am enrolled into Springfield College’s Physical Therapy program, where I am hoping to earn my doctorate after 6 years of school.
