Monday was a great night for local high school ice hockey teams, but a painful evening for area basketball squads.

E.O. Smith-Tolland and Tri-Town both won their first-round matchups in the Division III hockey tournament. The top-seeded Bucks avenged last season’s 2-1 overtime title game loss by crushing defending champion Newtown, 10-0 at the UConn Ice Arena. Meanwhile, in South Kent, No. 11 Tri-Town knocked off sixth-seeded Housatonic-Northwestern-Wamogo, 3-2.

Both teams will see quarterfinal action Thursday at locations and times to be announced. The Bucks will face No. 8 Staples-Weston-Shelton, while Tri-Town will tangle with third-seeded Westhill.

On the hardcourt, five boys teams from The Sports Department’s coverage area played Monday and all went down, though by a combined total of just 13 points. In Class M, Rocky Hill and Tolland were edged by a single point, Suffield lost by two and Enfield was eliminated by four. The biggest margin of defeat was Glastonbury’s five-point loss in Class LL.

In Class S girls action, No. 11 Windsor Locks was eliminated by third-seeded Thomaston.

A dozen local teams will be in action Tuesday night.
