5 Local Girls Teams Advance

Five area girls basketball teams successfully began their quests for state championships as the weather-delayed Class LL and M tournaments got underway Wednesday.

Both Class LL representatives from The Sports Department’s coverage area won their openers. Top-seeded South Windsor cruised past #32 New Milford, 69-24, while #17 Glastonbury hit the road and edged #16 Southington, 52-47.

The two schools will meet in the second round Friday in South Windsor at 7 p.m.

Six area schools began play in the Class M tournament, with three advancing. #4 Cromwell beat #29 Hillhouse, 64-42, and will host #13 Stonington Friday. #6 Suffield easily dispatched #27 Northwestern, 59-23, and will play at home Friday against #11 St. Joseph. #10 Enfield scored 50 points in the first half alone to rout #23 Prince Tech, 71-37; the Raiders travel to #7 Lewis Mills Friday.

#21 Rocky Hill, #26 Tolland and #30 Ellington were all eliminated Wednesday.
