Two heads may be better than one, but three heads turned out to be a winning combination for the Suffield High School boys soccer team Wednesday night.

With just over two minutes remaining in a scoreless tie with NCCC rival Avon, the Wildcats’ Andrew Moskowicz booted a corner kick that was headed first by Matthew Guminiak, then by Robert Della Penna and finally by Kyle Salters, who knocked it into the net for what proved to be the only goal in a 1-0 Suffield win that earned them the league title.

“Our corner kicks were a little bit sloppy, so Drew Moskowicz hit his first corner kick of the day and did exactly what I was hoping he would do: a frozen rope across the box that someone could get clean,” Suffield coach Mark Beigel said.

Wildcat goalkeeper Austin Mankouski made three outstanding saves in earning the shutout. Midway through the first half, he dove to his left to stop a low hard shot by Jack Keenan. Just after intermission, he again dove left to rob Kevin Brown, then later made a fine stop off an Avon corner kick.

Suffield entered the contest needing a win or tie to clinch the league championship; Avon needed a victory to claim the title.

The Wildcats stretched their unbeaten streak to 51 games, including 50 victories. The only minor blemish was a 1-1 tie at Avon in the teams’ first meeting of the season on Oct. 10. That game did not count toward the league standings.

Ranked first in Class LL with a 15-0-1 record, Suffield will draw a first-round bye in the state tournament beginning next week.
