Hasty, Tolland Girls Win CCC XC Titles

The pack mentality paid off for the Tolland High School girls cross country team Wednesday, as five Eagles placed in the top 10 en route to capturing the CCC championship at Wickham Park in Manchester.

Led by Hayley Collins’ second-place finish, Tolland amassed 28 points to easily outdistance Glastonbury (57) for the overall team championship. Katherine DeLoreto (third), Courtney Akerley (fifth), Michaela Caron (eighth) and Caitlin Swanson (10th) also blistered the 3.1-mile course ahead of the field of 164 finishers.

Glastonbury, which claimed the CCC North title, was paced by Allison McArdle (fourth), GAelyn Kattman (sixth), Kaitlyn Hebert (12th) and Kathryn Hastings (13th).

Haley Hasty of Rockville won the girls’ varsity race in 19:17.16, outrunning Collins by more than eight seconds. Other area runners placing in the top 20 were South Windsor’s Kaitlin Bakas (ninth) and RHAM’s Mari Larcheveque (15th).

On the boys’ side, it was a literal runaway for Ari Klau of Hall, who crossed the finish line in 15:44.39, more than 46 seconds ahead of runnerup Randy Neish of Glastonbury.

The Tomahawks placed second as a team with 79 points, trailing Hall’s 40. Glastonbury runners joining Neish in the top 20 were Roberto Piotto (ninth), Gabe Julien (16th) and Chris Dency (18th).

South Windsor’s Michael Stoker finished fourth, the only other runner in The Sports Department’s circulation area to crack the top 20.
