Ellington All-Stars Even Up Series

The Ellington 10-11 All-Star baseball team evened the championship series with a 2-0 defeat of Trumbull American.

With one out and a runner on second, the next batter hit a ball that looked like it was headed for the right center field fence for a double, but Logan Macaluso came out of nowhere from center field to make an incredible catch.

Trumbull wasn’t done though and with two outs, Ryan Teixeira hit a single to left field and Garrett Phelps charged the ball and threw home to prevent the run from scoring. With two on and two out, Shaw beared down and got the last batter to ground out to shortstop.

In the second inning, Trumbull had a runner on second base with two outs and and tried a fake bunt steal, but Ellington’s catcher Jason Leslie threw down to the shortstop, Mike Wearne, who was covering third base and stopped the runner in his tracks. Wearne threw to Matt Mateya at second base to get the runner in a run down. Mateya was able to chase the runner down before he made it to third to end the inning.

Ellington got things going in the fourth inning with two outs and no one on when Chris Wrona got a single then the next batter hit a ground ball to third base and the third baseman made an error, allowing runners to advance to second and third. Alex Maningas then hit a single over the shortstop’s head to knock in the only two runs of the game.

Mateya had the first hit of the game for Ellington, and each team had three hits. The game was called after four complete innings due to heavy rain.
