Ellington-Somers Tennis Team Sees Success

It was a successful season for the Ellington-Somers boys and girls tennis teams.

The boys team finished 11-3 overall, matching the best regular season record in program history, and finished second place in the NCCC. The boys were also runners-up in the NCCC Conference Tournament.

Three players – Kevin Sisco, Jerry Xu, and Micah Fox – earned All-Conference honors.

The girls finished 15-3 and finished third at the NCCC conference tournament. Three players –Kristine Gouin, Courtney Binkowski, and Ashley Thomas – earned All-Conference honors. Binkowski and Thomas were also named as All-State players.

For the boys team, two doubles teams made a deep run in the state tournament. James Rockett and Corey Maznicki made it to the Round of 16 and Fox and Sisco made it all the way to the semi-finals before bowing out to the No. 1 seed, and eventual state champion, from Guilford.

Fox had a 10-3 record at No. 1 singles and was the recipient of “Coaches Award.” Xu was 11-1 at No. 2 singles and Sisco 11-1 at No. 3 Singles, and they were named Co-MVPs of team.

Freshman Kyle Johnson received the “Most Improved Player” award on team.

In the girls individual State Tournament, Gouin and Kat Sisco played well but lost early. Binkowski and Thomas made a great run through the tournament – all the way to the quarterfinals, knocking off two seeded teams along the way – before finally losing to the No. 1 seed team from Newtown.

Gouin went 16-2 on the season at No. 1 singles and earned the team MVP. Freshman Candace Settle played very well at No. 3 Singles and earned the “Most Improved Player” award.
