Ellington Native Wins Championship

In mid-May, Dan Schofer’s Bentley University Ultimate Frisbee team made the trip to Ohio for the nationals and came home the D-III men’s Ultimate Frisbee national champions.

During the two-day tournament, Bentley played against schools from California, Minnesota, Oregon, and North Carolina.

In the final game of the tournament, No. 1 seed Bentley played Elon and found itself down – a position it had been in other times during the weekend – but battled back for the win.

“I thought we were out of it – I thought we were done,” said Lori Schofer, Dan’s mother. “They just totally pulled it together and pulled it off. It was absolutely phenomenal. It was the weekend of a lifetime.”

Schofer, an Ellington native, found Ultimate Frisbee as a freshman at Bentley. A basketball player, he wanted to play in college, but the tryouts were closed so he didn’t have the opportunity. He was invited to play Frisbee, it went well, and the rest is history.

Schofer will return to the team next year as a senior who will be looking to defend the title.
