Glastonbury Lacrosse Headed to Championship

Nineteen down, one to go.

The Glastonbury girls lacrosse team jumped out to a big early lead against Fairfield Warde in Tuesday night’s Class L semifinals and never looked back, going on to win 13-5 at West Haven High School and earning a berth in the championship game. The Tomahawks, who displayed their trademark depth throughout the game, are now 19-0.

To earn a state title and a perfect season, Glastonbury will have to take down third-seeded Darien, which defeated Cheshire in the first semifinal. The Blue Wave (17-2) won last year’s L championship. The championship game will be played Saturday at Bunnell High in Stratford. A time has not yet been announced.

The Tomahawks entered the game determined to get off to a strong start, and they did just that. The offense moved the ball well immediately, and scored two goals in the opening five minutes. A goal by Cami Santor with 11:12 remaining then kicked off a scoring flurry, as four more goals were scored in the next five minutes. Taylor Walker scored three of these, with Lindsay Shettle adding the fourth.

As well as Glastonbury’s offense played in the opening half, its defense played even better, holding Warde to just one goal. The defenders played very aggressively, limiting the Mustangs ability to move freely and pass the ball, and were able to make a few clutch plays near the goal. The Tomahawks went into halftime leading 7-1.

“I felt like our defense really came together today,” said Tomahawks coach Kris Cofiell. “They play well together and trust one another. When you trust the girl playing next to you, you know you can go for that double-team. Playing as a group is something we really pride ourselves on.”

Glastonbury did not let up on either end during the second half. It led 9-2 with just over nine minutes remaining before again going on a run, scoring four goals in the span of three minutes. Julia Ostrowski, Sara DiCenso, Walker and Santor scored during the span to push the lead to 13-2. The defense continued its relentless play through most of the half, until finally easing up in the final four minutes, when Warde scored three goals.

“Our defense was very good today, and that has a lot to do with our four low attackers defending really hard,” Cofiell said. “When they work hard, it allows our midfielder to work hard and helps the defenseman not concede that long pass.”

Walker and Santor both had huge days, scoring five and four goals respectively, and Shettle chipped in with two goals. Audrey Apanovitch had four saves in goal.

Glastonbury has a huge challenge ahead of it on Saturday, and is looking forward to facing it.

“We just need to step up and be prepared for what they throw at us,” Cofiell said. “It’s enough to get to the state championship, but now you have to play it. We’re looking forward to it. You can’t go wrong facing a team of their caliber.”
