Fortin to Play at Saint Anselm

Taylor Fortin, from Tolland, came to Wilbraham & Monson Academy to better his options for college.

Taylor finished his postgraduate year at the Academy with a great option, earning a full athletic scholarship to attend and play basketball at Saint Anselm College.

Taylor signed his National Letter of Intent to attend Saint Anselm during a ceremony in the WMA Athletic Center conference room May 15.

“I don’t think I would have been able to do this without the Academy,” Taylor said. “Coach (Chris) Sparks and (Mike) Mannix did so much for me. They put my name out there and put me in position to be in front of the best players in the country. That’s how I got a scholarship.”

Taylor shook a preseason ankle injury and enjoyed a strong season, helping the Titans to the Class AA semifinal round.

“I think Taylor was far and above our most consistent player during the course of the year,” Coach Sparks said of his point guard. “You knew what you were going to get on both ends of the floor. When he had to step up and score 30 points against Worcester Academy, he did it; and when he had to distribute the ball and get nine assists against St. Thomas More, he did it. Whatever it took to win, he was there to do it.”

More importantly, Taylor’s exemplary character and on-board attitude were evident on and off the basketball court throughout his stay at the Academy.

“Taylor truly is a triple-threat,” Coach Sparks said. “He has remarkable character, he’s a good student and obviously a terrific basketball player so he has the three things every college and university are looking for. To come in as a postgraduate and do what he did not only from a basketball standpoint but also his character and leadership are really the reason why we had the success we had.”

Saint Anselm plays in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Hawks went 22-8 last season and qualified for the NCAA Division II tournament.

“I like the coaching staff a lot,” Taylor said. “I liked the school and it’s what I’m looking for in a school. I’m excited to be a part of it.”
