Local Athletes Excelling in College

Junior pitcher Allyson Fournier of the Tufts softball team is a strong candidate for NESCAC Pitcher of the Week every week, but that was even more the case on April 21 as she was selected for the ninth time in her career.

Fournier, from South Windsor, pitched a perfect game against Bridgewater State University. It was the fourth of her All-American career, and she decorated it with 15 strikeouts. The game was arguably the second strongest outing of her career, behind only a perfect game with 19 K’s against Middlebury in the 2011 NESCAC tournament.

The no-hitter was Fournier’s second this season and the ninth of her career. The shutout was her seventh this season and the 30th overall (not including three shared).

Fournier’s week also included two starts at Bates during a NESCAC East weekend series. She went seven innings allowing two hits and a run with 11 strikeouts and a walk in a victory to start the series. The run was the first she has allowed in 11 outings dating back to March 20. She also started the second game of the Saturday double-header at Bates, but was pulled early after the offense built a big lead. She did not give up a hit or a run and recorded three strikeouts with a walk in two innings.

For the week, Fournier was 2-0 with a 0.44 era and 29 strikeouts in 16 innings. She allowed just two hits and walked two. Fournier leads NESCAC this spring with 12 wins, seven shutouts, 167 strikeouts, a 0.41 era and a .083 batting average against.

This is the second straight week that a Tufts pitcher has won the award. Senior Lauren Giglio was selected last week. Fournier was honored earlier this season on March 24. In addition to the two awards this spring, she was picked four times last year and three times in 2012.

On May 5, Fournier was again honored as the NESCAC Softball Pitcher of the Week.

Fournier helped lead the Jumbos to the 2014 conference title at Williams College over the weekend. Tufts earned its third straight NESCAC crown and ninth overall.

Fournier pitched every inning of the NESCAC Championship for the Jumbos, earning all three victories. She threw a one-hit shutout against Middlebury to open the tournament, then allowed one hit one run on four hits in the winner’s bracket against Williams. She worked through lousy weather in the final to earn the win. With the game tied 1-1 in the fourth, she got out of a bases-loaded with no outs jam by retiring three Ephs in a row.

The week also included a Tuesday double-header against MIT and Wheaton. Fournier went eight innings, allowing four hits and a run with 11 strikeouts in a 2-1 extra-innings victory over Wheaton.

** Assumption College women’s lacrosse freshman midfielder Tori Russo, from South Windsor, has been named as the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week for her play in a pair of Assumption victories.

In a 2-0 week, Russo posted nine points with seven goals and two assists for the Hounds. After three goals and an assist in a home win over Southern Connecticut, Russo capped the week with four goals, one assist, one ground ball, and one caused turnover in a home win over Franklin Pierce.
