Student-Athlete of the Month: Fermi’s Purdue

Alex Purdue is a three-sport athlete at Enrico Fermi High School, participating in football, wrestling and track & field. He was named the school’s best student-athlete for the winter season in 2012-13 and made the All-Academic team. He is a National Honor Society member, ranking in the top 15 percent of his class.

How does Alex prepare before a game? I focus only on the game and what I need to do in order to succeed. I make sure that I am ready to perform and that I do my best for myself, my team and my coaches because they depend on me as an athlete.

What is he most excited about with regards to the winter season? I am extremely excited for the Class M wrestling tournament coming up with the goal of placing.

What is his most memorable moment to date in his high school uniform? My fondest memories aren’t on game day but are with my “family” on the practice field, the mats and the track. My time as an athlete has improved me as a person and has set me apart from other individual. My love for sports has helped to define my identity.

What does Alex hope to accomplish this season in wrestling? I hope to place at the class tournament and to compete in the State Opens.

Who is his favorite pro or college athlete? I cannot say that I have a particular favorite athlete, but I admire those who have committed their life to living a sport. This could be doing early morning runs to make weight, spending a day in the weight room to get stronger or doing agility drills to improve their performance. I admire all who participate in college and pro sports.

What are his college plans? I plan to attend the U.S. Naval Academy to study chemistry and then serve as a naval officer for my career.
