Student Athlete of the Month: Simsbury’s Helmkamp

Brad is a well-rounded student athlete, whose tough play on the football and lacrosse field, and work on the wrestlimg mat has made him all-conference in all three sports. 

Some of Brad’s accomplishents: Simsbury High School Record for tackles, single season (159) and career (349), started 31 straight games for the varsity football team, CCC Division I All-Conference Linebacker, team captain football, team MVP and Simsbury High School Leadership Award, Hartford Courant “Fab 15” (Weeks 1 and 2 of the 2013 season), Connecticut LL All-State Football Team: defense, Hartford Courant All-Defensive Team 2012, Connecticut LL 2nd place wrestling 220lb weight class, Football team defensive MVP (Sophomore and Junior Years).

How Brad prepares for a game: I like to listen to my “pump up” music while studying the game plan. I also like to watch as much scout film as possible to prepare for the other team.

Why Brad is excited for the winter season: Getting ready to help the wrestling team work towards a divisional and a state title.

Brad’s most memorable moment in a Trojan uniform: Sophomore year when I was able to play in a football game against South Windsor at Rentschler Field.  It was an amazing experience to play at a stadium that big.

Brad’s goals for the winter season: Win both individual and team CCC Divisional titles. Win a state title.

Brad’s favorite pro athlete: My favorite pro athlete is Patrick Willis, linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers. My favorite college athlete is my brother Josh, who is the starting cornerback for Williams College.

Brad’s college plans:I would like to play football at a college that’s strong in both sports and academics. I am interested in studying either communications or criminal justice in college.
