11/11 Girl’s Soccer Blog: State Tournament

The girl’s soccer season wraps up this week.  Several area teams are competing for a state title.  The Sports Department will be at every game to provide you with photos and in-depth coverage.

Class LL

 Suffield

The Juggernaut that is the Suffield High School girl’s soccer team will look to preserve their undefeated season against 4 Mercy (15-2-1) in Middletown tonight at 4pm.  The Wildcats (18-0-0) are the number one overall seed in the Class LL tournament.   A year ago, Suffield was a three seed in the Class M tournament, but lost 4-3 in the quarterfinals to St. Joseph.

The Wildcats earned a first round bye and defeated 17 Newington 4-0 in the second round.  Suffield then beat 8 New Milford 3-0 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals.  Suffield, who won the NCCC, returned ten starters this year including former The Sports Department Athlete of the Week Jillian Consolini.

 Glastonbury

Last year, the number one seed Glastonbury Tomahawks girl’s soccer team lost 2-1 in the finals of the Class LL State Tournament to Newton.  This year the Tomahawks are determined to avenge last season’s heartbreaking loss with another run deep into the tournament.

Glastonbury (17-0-1) is a two seed this season and will take on 3 St. Joseph at 6:30pm tonight in West Haven.  St. Joseph is also 17-0-1 and is also looking to make up for a loss in the Class M finals last year.

The Tomahawks had a first round bye and advanced to the semifinals with wins over 15 Fairfield-Warde and 10 South Windsor, both in penalty kicks.

Class M

 Tolland

The Eagles (14-2-2) are a two seed in this year’s Class M State Tournament.  Tolland received a first round bye before beating 15 Granby 3-1 in the second round, and 10 Lyman Memorial 1-0 in the quarterfinals.

Tolland will try to advance to the finals tonight at 6:30pm in Middletown against 3 Watertown (14-2-2).  Last year as a five seed, the Eagles were unable to move out of the second round, as they lost to 12 Ellington by a score of 3-2.
