Rockville’s Struggles Continue

ROCKVILLE — The Rockville Rams fell to 0-8 on the season with a 40-7 loss to visiting Plainville Friday Night.  Plainville Quarterback Jeff Zeigenhagen was too much for the Rams’ defense as he led his team to a comfortable victory.

Rockville started the game strong.  Tom Bartol intercepted a pass from Zeigenhagen that set up a 15-yard touchdown run by Shawn Golding to put the Rams up 7-0 with 4:17 left in the first.

But the intensity was to be short-lived.

“We punched first and then we stopped punching,” Rams’ senior quarterback Tom Bartol said of his team.

Plainville responded to the Rams’ early lead immediately.  Zeigenhagen ran the ball eight yards for a touchdown on the ensuing drive, and the Blue Devils forced Rockville to punt on their next possession.  Zeigenhagen then threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Eric Fischer on the first play of their next drive to put Plainville up 14-7.

Plainville head coach Chris Farrell was pleased with the way his team responded.  “We were sloppy in the first half, but we came right back after Rockville scored and we did things the right way.”

Penalties proved costly for the Rams in the first half leading to good field position and extra opportunities for the Plainville Blue Devils before halftime.

Zeigenhagen took advantage of the Rams’ mistakes, adding a 3-yard touchdown run and an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jon Lindgren to give the Blue Devils a 27-7 lead at halftime.

“We were right there with those guys,”  Rockville head coach Steve Schortman said of his team.  “My young men hanged their heads real quick as soon as they were down three scores.”

But Rockville seemed to show signs of life in the third quarter.

Plainville opened the half by moving the ball within four yards of Rockville’s goal line only to be deterred by the Rams’ Defense. Although Rockville’s offense went silent, the defense held the Rams in the game by holding Plainville scoreless in the third quarter.

The Blue Devils would not be denied long, however, as they opened up the fourth quarter with a 4-yard run by RJ Gross to put Plainville up 33-7.  Gross then added a second touchdown run with 4:18 left in the game to move the score to 40-7 in favor of the Blue Devils.

The Rams strung together a promising drive late in the fourth, but their fate was sealed when Tom Bartol was picked in the end zone to secure Plainville’s 40-7 victory.

“Our offensive line played well and Jeff Zeigenhagen did a good job staying in the pocket and throwing the ball,” Farrell said.

Zeigenhagen was 10-20 passing for 136-yards and 4 touchdowns.

With the win, Plainville moved to 3-4 and will play at Tolland next Friday night.

Shawn Golding led the Rams offensively with 12 carries for 78 yards and a touchdown.

The winless Rams will look to get their first win next Friday at Platt.

Despite the loss, Rockville’s quarterback Tom Bartol seemed optimistic.  “We will be strong for next week.”
