Glastonbury swim team impressive as hosts of CCC North Relays

The Glastonbury High School Girls Swimming Team hosted the Central Connecticut Conference (CCC) North Division Relays on September 12 and if the results of this meet are any indication of what might transpire this season, then the Tomahawks will have a fantastic year.

This meet brings together the CCC North teams for a kick-off meet where no scores are kept but it allows the new swimmers to get their feet wet and experience racing for the first time this season. The CCC North is comprised of Glastonbury, South Windsor, East Catholic, Manchester, E.O. Smith and East Hartford. E.O Smith cancelled at the last minute and East Hartford had a conflicting dual meet on the same afternoon.

This fun-filled meet allows all of the girls to warm up those vocal chords as evidenced by the deafening noise in the pool that afternoon. The GHS girls provided a clean sweep that afternoon by winning all eight of the relays. Not only did they win every relay, but they touched the wall first and second in four of the relays and completely dominated the 200 medley relay by finishing in the top four positions.

Several swimmers got an early jump on qualifying for the state meets at the end of the season. Only the lead-off swimmer can turn in an official state time during a relay and seven of the eight relay events have an opening leg that is an official state meet event – only the 200 medley relay doesn’t count since there is no 50 yard backstroke event in the state meet.

There were 8 GHS state meet qualifiers – Abbey Fusco (100 back), Shannon Linsey (200 free), Sophie Gysling (100 breast), Kate Hegwood (100 back), Jessica Zhang (50 & 100 free), Jordan Mailly (50 free), Kate O’Connor (100 fly) and Angie Sang (100 fly).

The Tomahawks have 10 new freshmen – Jordan Mailly, Angie Sang, Brynn Campbell, Shannon Linsey, Sydnie Butler, Jessica Li, Daley O’Keefe, Marissa Rubb, Nicole Sellew and Jessica Zhang, one new sophomore – diver Sara Jefferson and one returning junior – Sarah Ahlberg. The captains that will guide this large team are Abbey Fusco, Cate Peterson, Luna Milne and Kerstan Mahland.
