Ellington girls tennis undefeated after back-to-back wins over Avon

The Ellington High School girls tennis team stands alone atop the NCCC with an undefeated 9-0 record after back-to-back 4-3 wins over perennial powerhouse Avon on April 25th and April 29th. These wins mark the first ever victories over Avon for the EHS tennis program.

Under the direction of head coach Rich Willis and assistant coach Kyla Walgren, the girls earned a home victory over Avon 4-3 on April 25th based on individual wins by Assumption College-bound Hannah Riley in first singles, Kat Sisco in third singles, Karli King and Allison Steinmetz in second doubles, and Hayley Babineau and Ashley Thomas in third doubles.

Babineau and Steinmetz pulled their team even to 3-3 with Avon before sophomore Kat Sisco sealed the victory with a 6-4, 7-5 win after which she was unable to get off the courts before being mobbed by her ecstatic teammates.

Monday’s return match at Avon High School again ended with Ellington being a 4-3 victor but not before much more drama was felt by all players, coaches, and fans. Riley overcome a tough 0-6 first set loss and won her final two sets 6-0 and 7-5 to earn her victory. Sisco and the doubles team of Babineau and Thomas again pulled out victories to set the stage with a 3-3 tie with Avon and seniors Karli King and Allison Steinmetz battled tough opponents and oncoming darkness to earn their own 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 victory (after starting 0-5) which brought home another win for Ellington.

Ellington next play on Wednesday, May 1st when they travel to Windsor Locks.
